Mountain Village • Sidemen

Sidemen is a rather large village in Karangasem, Bali in the foothills near the extremely active volcano Gunung Agung. It is largely a farming community, growing rice and peppers. It is much cooler and the weather came be a welcome relief from the hot and humid Bali climate. Much of it is reminiscent of ‘Old Bali’ tourism not making as large a footprint here in the green hills.

Tuel Sleng • Phnom Penh

In April M&E went to Cambodia. In Phnom Penh we felt it was our social responsibility to visit Tuel Sleng or S21. This High School in the heart of the capital was converted into a torture chamber for enemies of the state. Soon almost everyone became an enemy as the Khmer Rouge cannibalised it’s population. The horror was palpable, walking through the genocide museum listening to recounted stories from guards, local citizens, government officials and the few surviving inmates was hard to take, to say the least. Still we were glad we attended least humanity forget to remain vigilant and never let this history repeat.

Silk Weaving • Chiang Mai

Weavers play an integral role in South-east Asian society. Silk is produced year-round in Thailand. A single thread filament is too thin to use on its own so women combine many threads to produce a thicker, usable fiber.

Fishing Village • Lombok Island

Tanjung Laut is a small fishing village on the south-east coast of Lombok Island. We left before dawn from Senggigi in order to arrive while the fish were fresh and the market vibrant. Our strategy was simple; Diana would talk and I would shoot. Our Bahasa Indonesia, while far from fluent, is good enough to discuss the morning catch, tell where we are from—Amerika!—and why we have come. The majority of the people on Lombok are indigenous Sasak whom practice a form of Islam. We have always found them to be very friendly, helpful, curious and kind.
